10 Things You May Not Know About YouTube

In my last post I mentioned that the social media ‘verse is full of some best kept secrets. YouTube is one of them.Tap into the Power of YouTube

This Time cover from a couple of years ago (with the shiny mirrored screen) was prescient, but not quite enough… I’d cross that ‘You’ out and say ‘Us’. Hasn’t it felt that way these last couple of years? How we’ve grown a global collective consciousness?

Despite this cover, YouTube is not usually the first site that comes to mind when thinking about social media. I guess we take it a bit for granted while we wax rhapsodic about Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr and Quora. Yet when I think about cultural shifts enabled by social media, YouTube is the place that comes most vibrantly to mind. It’s big, wide and deep. Mature. Eccentric. Probably not what you think it is.

YouTube has its Own Language

Launched in 2005, YouTube has had a bit of time to mature and to find its own unique ‘language’. This is a process all new media go through – when they are first developed, people usually put them to much the same uses as the preceding media. Like when motion pictures were first developed and people only used them to record stage shows and the like, until someone invented new methods of narrative and human cognition adapted to the new stimuli.

YouTube has its Own Culture

YouTube is a culture in its own right. Different people and organizations use YouTube in different ways, but there are many common practices and themes. YouTube’s language is not just about videos – it’s about the million conversations taking place, that use video as a medium.

  • It’s about creation and response to creation, and the vast cornucopia of creative majesty and frivolity that comes from such tools in the hands of everyone.
  • It’s inclusive, not exclusive. Except I wouldn’t say it’s about us as individuals – it’s much more about us as a collective culture.
  • It’s the current apex of remix culture and all sorts of experiments in art, performance, learning, conversation, activism, contribution, participation and transformation.

1. YouTube is the place to make money on the Web.

Community and creativity plus Google tools for webmasters works really well.

It estimated that during 2011 YouTube generated nearly 2 billion in revenue.

In fact, straight from the YouTube Blog:

The mobile ad market is growing fast and set to surpass $1 billion in the US in 2011. We also have a new milestone to share – YouTube now exceeds 200 million views a day on mobile, a 3x increase in 2010“.

Find the Khan Academy limiting? You can learn anything on YouTube, and you’re frequently learning from experts who are providing their expertise in specific response to community requests:

I have talked before about orbits. Videos are conversation. YouTube’s conversational culture is very embedded.

YouTube is the home of alternative media. Want to hear some real news? Tired of AM radio? Curious about aliens, ghosts or ‘chem-trails’?

5. Control is sporadic.

Copyright holders police YouTube, but not as consistently as you think. You can nearly always find the thing you’re looking for, although seeing long videos divided into 10-15 parts can be very tiresome. Still, it’s an amazing place if you enjoy the nether-regions of the long tail. Especially amazing for historical footage and formerly bootleg assets.

 

6. Want Fame? Freedom? A Voice?

YouTube is your best bet these days.

Whether you are an emerging chef with TV star aspirations, or have an adorable baby, YouTube is the place you can acquire some recognition, and maybe even some fame. The lady on the school bus was this week’s media darling (after a YouTube emerged of her being abused by kids on the school bus), which I learned about on CNN.

7. We should appreciate our information freedom.

YouTube is uniformly banned in many countries. But it’s kept on the down low, so I asked my Ethiopian cab driver if it’s banned there. Because Skype is – and using it can get you 15 years in prison. Yes, was the answer. Also banned in China.

 8. YouTube is about content AND efficiency.

A lot of YouTube creators act as information filters – they find the best content and find unique ways to present it. They frequently instruct and summarize. I can’t possibly get to all the interesting conferences, so YouTube is a viable stand-in.

The surface of YouTube can look like a very banal place. Everyone has a talk show and that’s a good thing and a bad thing. Learn to use some YouTube specific tricks to find the best content. Follow channel owners you like – look for recommended (not sponsored) content.

When I discovered social media for the first time and saw its potential as a marketing medium to amplify content, spread stories and brand messages, I was excited.19 Revelations from a Social Media Marketing Blogger

Social media became my shiny new toy.

Four years later after logging onto Facebook for the first time, I am still as passionate as ever about social networks and the democratization to marketing and publishing that they bring.

Is Ignorance Bliss?

Many businesses are now discovering its potential. What still astounds me though is that many business owners and marketers still do not realize the marketing horsepower that social media provides that can accelerate their global brand discovery.

Maybe it is a generational issue or just plain ignorance and contentment with the status quo.

The challenge for the social media naysayer’s though is that new “upstarts” are disrupting their business models and threatening to put them out of business. A few years of ignorance could turn into a lifetime of business extinction.

The Interview

This is an interview that I had recently with the print magazine “Search Marketing Standard” which was published in their summer edition.

It is now online here for tweeting, Google plussing and Facebook and LinkedIn sharing.

This interview content has now been set free to be powered by low friction sharing and accelerated by global social networks.

Question #1.

Your blog (at jeffbullas.com) has a very large following that you’ve built over the last two-plus years. Why did you choose to focus on social media instead of some other aspect of marketing online?

Answer: On discovering Facebook, then Twitter I realised that social media was topic that intrigued me and I  then became passionate about social networks. I also felt that on seeing people’s obsession with the medium that it was something I couldn’t ignore and would be a game changer to marketing and online publishing.

Question #2.

You’ve grown your readership and following enormously. How about some details of your reach? And what would you say was the single most important thing you did to influence that growth?

Answer: Twitter has so far been my biggest social network to distribute my articles and content globally and I initially concentrated on Twitter and built up a targeted and focused following and today I have over 100,000 followers.I also use a Facebook page where I have nearly 10,000 fans.

After joining those 2 social networks, I then started my blog and today I have over 300,000 page views and 170,000 unique readers every month that read my blog posts.

I also use platforms such as Slideshare where I have over 130,000 views of my presentations that I have presented as keynotes to international events and conferences in countries including Turkey, Italy and New Zealand.

Question #3.

In January of this year, you made the Top 50 social media power influencers on Forbes.com, coming in at an impressive #14. I know Forbes used a complex formula (from PeekYou’s social pull metric) to figure out who should make the cut, but what do you personally think makes your content so appealing? What do you offer that other social media bloggers don’t?

Answer: It was an honour to be selected by Forbes and it was a pleasant surprise.  I have worked hard at making my content helpful and relevant by listening to my readers to see what resonates and is shared the most.

One of the objectives I set out to achieve is to solve problems and provide a lot of “How to” articles. Also  a very important key to make it appealing is to write headlines that make people click through to my articles as this is the first important step in the process of obtaining interest and readers.

Also 2 important elements that I address that is often different to other bloggers is that my content is very focused and about what my readers want and like and not about me.

Question #4.

You’re based in Australia, while most of our readers are located in North America. Can you give us a couple of examples of some social media campaigns in Australia that you found particularly impressive and influential?

Answer: One campaign that was very effective was the one run for Tourism Queensland. Titled “The  Best Job in the World”

The results were impressive .

The concept was simple: post a one-minute video application on Tourism Queensland’s Web site explaining why you should be chosen as caretaker of Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef and you might get to blog and cam your way through a six-month gig that paid about $100K U.S. The story broke with a Reuters placement around sunrise in Australia on January 12, 2009. By breakfast time in London, AP was interviewing Tourism Queenslands’s UK director for a broadcast package that turned up on the morning shows in the U.S.

  • Within two days there were 1,100 TV placements in the U.S. alone
  • In 30 hours they had 400, oo0 new visitors. The goal was to get 400,000 new visitors to it’s website (www.islandreefjob.com) over the course of the one-year campaign
  • One million hits on the second day
  • The million hits crashed the site
  • When they brought it back up it was hosted on 10 Web servers, the maximum number of servers possible
  • Approximately 34,684 people from more than 200 countries applied for the job of Island Caretaker

The second one that impressed me was for the National Australia Bank

The NAB bank is one of the largest banks in Australia and they tweeted the following tweet that appeared to be a mistake by a junior community manager.

It was in fact part of an integrated social media and traditional marketing strategy to get people to break with their current bank and to create buzz about their new competitive pricing across a range of their banking products  that they were offering to the market .

The Results

  • Across the various social networks the Twitter campaign created 66% of all banking conversations online
  • In three weeks they had a 20% increase in transaction accounts
  • 50% increase in credit card applications
  • 35% increase in mortgage enquiries
  • 45% in mortgage re-finance applications

Question #5.

As someone who started out blogging awhile back, do you think that blogging is in danger of becoming irrelevant? As more and more social media properties come onto the scene, is the audience getting fragmented by too many online properties trying to get their attention?

Answer: I don’t think blogging is becoming irrelevant but evolving. What we have now is a whole range of blogging options such as microblgging “Twitter” and social  media platforms such as “Tumblr”. Creating a Facebook “Page” is also a blogging option now that is easy to use and very public and is multimedia rich.

Currently there are over 155 million blogs so I don’t think it is going away any time soon. You just have more options on what platform to use.

Question #6.

What about Google Plus? The recent redesign release seems to be pitting Google even more against Facebook than ever before, with an emphasis on the visual and a look that has a lot of similar features to Facebook. Do you think Google can steal the scene from Facebook?

Answer: The challenge for Google is that Facebook has become the defacto standard for a persons online identity and interaction. I think Google+ has placed healthy competition which has improved   the entire social networking landscape and ecosystem and made Facebook improve its product. Don’t underestimate Google+ as it is firstly owned by Google wjho has very deep pockets and sees Google+ as “core” to its online strategy including search.

Question #7.

How do you think the increasing emphasis on the visual will mesh with the focus on original and useful content that is the cornerstone of Google’s notion of “authority” ranking?

It is obvious that the increasing popularity of the visual medium on the web will change how online platforms are designed and function. Google’s challenge is to remain relevant on an increasingly social web and the launch of Google+ (which cost over $500 million to design and develop) is evidence of how seriously Google is treating social. The integration of the +1 button that allows people to vote on the content and links will determine what content Google ranks high in search engines whether it be visual such as YouTube ( a Google property) or  Picasa (a Google image and photo social media site). Google is treating the “social signals generated as core to its technology across all platforms.

Question #8.

Recent studies have shown that we don’t trust Facebook insofar as our privacy is concerned, much less understand its privacy settings, yet we continue to flock to it and increase our participation. Why are we ignoring this? Should people be expected to read and understand a mile-long TOS to avoid future problems with unexpected use of their data?

Answer: We ignore the privacy problem because social networks provide so many other benefits. People are now treating this type of communication as vital as a phone or texting. It is still early days and people will adapt to it’s the challenges and nuances over time. Technology is changing fast but humans are slow to change.

Question #9.

Do you have a prediction on the next big thing coming from a social media property?

Answer: I don’t know what it will look like but it will embrace two key elements. It will be highly “visual” and “mobile”. Instagram is maybe a hint of what is to come.

Now let’s turn to questions more closely related to businesses and social media.

Question #10.

In your opinion, does social media suit some business goals better than others? What should be the ultimate goal of social media participation for businesses? Is it to create awareness, drive traffic to your website, sell product, branding, or something entirely different?

Answer: Businesses have different goals they want from each element of marketing. It is no different for social media as it is just another marketing tool and medium. Marketing fundamentals still apply.

For some brand awareness is paramount for others it is increased sales. Any marketing strategy and the resulting tactics should keep in mind the 2 key fundamentals.

Social media is not a magic bullet and should be used where appropriate just like Television, radio or email marketing

Question #11.

With so many different social media outlets demanding we interact with them for the sake of our businesses, how should a business owner decide which one(s) to should concentrate on?

Answer: Business should focus on what social media networks where their customers and prospects are engaging on. For a simple example Pinterest is highly used by women so fashion and cooking are relevant and appropriate.

Question #12.

If you had to identify just one benefit of participating in social media for the typical small business, what would it be and why?

Answer: The major benefit is and why social media so potent: It’s ability to amplify word-of-mouth effects.

Why is this important? Because it is efficient and effective channel and can lead to “cut through” of a brand  on a crowded web of 550 million websites. Standing out and being everywhere is vital.

Question #13.

What is the biggest mistake you think small businesses make with social media?

Answer: The biggest mistake is not having a strategy or a plan with appropriate resources allocated. Just because it is social doesn’t mean it is free. Itg requires funding to resource it and run it just like any other proper marketing.

Question #14.

The new Facebook timeline is now reality. Do you see this as a positive move for businesses marketing themselves via Facebook? Or is it going to make it more difficult?

Answer: It’s still early days and some sites are reporting a lowering of engagement but I think that everyone is still working it out. I think the secret might may be to take advantage of its stronger visual design. That wil mean sourcing and using more compelling and shareable  images and photos to communicate.

Question #15.

As a follow-up, how do you think Facebook is going to handle the dichotomy between people using it as a social network and those trying to do business via it? Is the boundary between the two going to further blur?

Answer: Facebook is trying to maintain a similar theme and common ecosystem between pages and profiles.

It is creating an ecosystem that has  the ability for common functionality but allowing the outsourcing of app development for business and personal to provide a  diverse and rich and evolving social networking and mobile ecosystem that works for both.

Question #16.

In your opinion, are companies making good use of the synergy between social, mobile, and local?

Answer: I think that the synergy between social, mobile and local  (eg Foursqaure) is still at embryonic stage and yet to reach critical mass. So at this stage it is highly experimental.

Question #17.

With so many conflicting calls on time and money, should businesses be focusing more on one of these three (social, mobile, local) now? How does this fit with the volatile nature of social media, where it seems as if just as you begin to see some movement from your development of a particular social media property, another one eclipses it totally.

Answer: Social is where the focus should be currently as it is much more mature. Local and mobile marketing are not at a mature stage yet to warrant large marketing investment. They should be monitored though to  ensure that as they develop you can take advantage of them.

What do you think is the biggest challenge for business in 2012 insofar as social media marketing is concerned? How does this answer differ for large corporations versus small ones?

The biggest challenge is finding people with enough experience and skill to know what to do. There are a lot of so called experts in social  media that don’t really understand it but profess to.

Question #19.

A final question. If you had to choose just one social media product to integrate with a business today, which would it be? Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, something different?

Answer: Just choosing one social media product is not advisable. Multi channel marketing provides synergy and leverage that is more than the sum of the parts. Your target audience will prefer a range of different media and networks so that you can reach the largest audience. Some prefer watching a video on YouTube, others would rather read an article on your blog and a lot will want to access your content from Facebook. Don’t put all your social media  eggs in one basket. Create and publish your content at your hub (website and blog) and distribute it out to your audience where they hangout (and each business is different). This includes the social network outposts of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Slideshare, Pinterest and LinkedIn to name the top six.

The words we use can inspire, inform or wound.

Leaders tap into the power of the spoken word to motivate the masses for good or evil.

Words were first written on pieces of papyrus, then parchment and paper.

We wrote by hand and pen and now we have moved onto  keyboards and touchscreens.

Words and stories are now delivered digitally on mobile devices that can be taken anywhere at anytime. Much like a book really.

Communication mediums are changing but words are forever.

Words take us on Journeys

I remember falling in love with words through reading novels that took me to faraway places. Without leaving my suburban home I was transported to tropical lagoons, sunken treasure and  turquoise ringed atolls.

Hiding under the bed covers to read after the mandatory “lights out” curfew was a common occurrence.

Books with compelling words jumbled together creatively provide stories that can be an escape hatch to avoid the boredom of a doctor or dentists waiting room. They can be read in a paperback format, on a kindle or your even your iPad.

Keep it Simple

I thought I was clever when I was young and foolish because I used big words. My cousin who was two years older than me accused me of intellectual verbal snobbery and he was right!

We often fall into the trap of  trying to be too intellectual and forget that simple is best.

According to Steven King, the first common tool that you should have as a writer is vocabulary. Some people have enormous vocabularies, but it isn’t what you have, it is how you use it.

His first tip in his non fiction book titled “On Writing” , is to display the power of keeping it simple. Steven uses an example of a 50 word sentence from John Steinbeck’s novel “The Grapes of  Wrath”

Some of the owner men were kind because they hated what they had to do, and some of them were angry because they hated to be cruel, and some of them were cold because they had long ago found that one could not be an owner unless one were cold“.

He points outs that of the 50 words, 39 were single syllable!

Emotional Marketing

Tapping into emotions are key, especially as a writer, blogger and communicator. We can use new technology mediums such as videos, images, photos and audio podcasts. The reality is that words are still the core foundation to communication despite the attractive shiny new multimedia toys.

Seeing that we are all now publishers on a social web, it is important to develop our skills to engage our audience with words.

Using words wisely is still key but words are much more than their dictionary meaning.

According to research from Dr. Hakim Chisti in the 1970′s “tonality that flows through language, are in many ways more profound and powerful than the dictionary meaning itself”

What follows from this is that “Communication is the key of effective marketing. And the key to communication is being able to reach the client at an emotional level. Involving them in your copy, and invoking their deeper thoughts.

Measuring “Emotional Marketing Value”

As a writer one of the first skills you should nurture is the art of writing a headline. This is what your readers will see first. This has to tap the emotions first to get them to take the next step…read your article.

On the social web with time poor readers, making sure you write headlines that attract the first click are vital whether that is on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+.

The Advanced Marketing Institute has developed an “Emotional Marketing Value Headline Analyzer Tool” from this research which purports to take the guesswork out of measuring  headlines. While many marketers ‘guess’ how people will react to various words and offers, they say they have determined a test which will give you an actual rating that you can use to judge how well received your copy will be to others.

 I tested at least 10 different headlines before selecting this headline because it obtained a high rating. If you are here and reading this article it is maybe because this tool is effective.

Some of the other headlines I tested were a lot lower and so were discarded. It does appear to be based upon scientific research and is worth evaluating and trialing.

The 3 Key Spheres to Consider in Your Headline

The free tool from the Advanced  Marketing Institute for analyzing your headline uses three key spheres which are dependent  on your audience. The headline I am using here is for predominantly a business audience so the “Intellectual” sphere is vital here.

Here are the 3 key spheres that they consider you will need to take into account when constructing a headline as well as using these types of words in your writing.

Key #1.  Intellectual

These are words which are especially effective when offering products and services that require reasoning or careful evaluation.

Key #2. Empathetic

Empathetic words are what you should use if you want to resonate with empathetic impact. These often bring out profound and strong positive emotional reactions in people.

Key #3. Spiritual

These are words which havethe strongest potential for influence and often appeal to people at a very deep emotional level.

It just seems like yesterday when it was announced.

Part of me said “not another social network” while the other curious Jeff thought “this could be what we need to keep Facebook honest

12 months later it appears that it is now the third largest social network in the English speaking world behind Twitter and of course Facebook.

What a lot of  people don’t realize as cocooned westerners is that we don’t have a monopoly on successful social networks with Sina Weibo in China having over  300 million users with over 100 million messages being posted every day.

It does appear though that it is now possible that Google+ will be knocking on Facebook’s door within a couple years.

Google+ Hits 250 Million Users

The actual hard numbers that Google+ has just announced at the I/O conference is that in just one year it has grown from zero to 250 million plus users. That is growth in anyone’s language.

What are some of the other facts, figures and statistics that are worth noting.

  • 150 million monthly users
  • 75 million daily users
  • Google+ active users spend over 60 minutes a day across Google products
  • Google+ users spend on average 12 minutes per day in the Google+ (that is 360 minutes per month which compares very favorably to Facebooks 441 minutes per month)
  • The Google+ team shipped a new build every day for the whole year, except one Friday in August. (that is what happens when you have deep pockets with Google+ rumored to have been developed at a cost of over $500 million)

The time spent by users per month puts another face on previous reports that Google+ engagement was poor.

Other Important  Announcements

Google isn’t sitting on its hands and continues to roll out new features for Google+ and complimentary products and services.

It is worth pointing out that  Google considers Google+ not comparable to other competing social platforms because all its different products, and particularly YouTube, Gmail and Google+ really constituted a ‘social graph’- one that would create an entire Google experience.

Google sees it as “core” to its ecosystem and considers it absolutely vital to embed social interaction with its competitive advantage in search – by making search more relevant to user experience.

So what are the other key announcements?

1. Google+ Tablet

When I bought my iPhone 3 years ago it changed how I worked and played. My iPad has taken that to a new level again. The issue for a lot of  people is the price point that the Apple tablet starts at.

Google+ has announced a new tablet that will now make it possible to put an affordable tablet in everyone’s hands. The Google Nexus 7 will come in at a price point of only $199. Amazon now has a serious competitor to its Kindle Fire.

The key specifications you might like to know about.

  • 7 inch screen
  • Operating system is Android 4.1 (playfully titled “Jelly Bean”)
  • Ships with Chrome for Android for the first time
  • 1280 x 800 resolution screen
  • 8 Gb of  Memory (next model up comes with 16Gb for $249)

What is also worth noting is that Google’s Play which is Google’s online market for Android apps, movies , music and books (with currently 20 billion downloads) is out to become a serious competitor to the Apple and Amazon stores. Also announced was the new feature of being able to buy movies and not just rent them.  So watch this space, Apple and Amazon need some competition to help keep prices down!

I think I need to buy one for my Mum and Dad. Maybe I should buy it for myself first to make sure it provides a good user experience.

2. Google+ Events

I noticed when I logged on to Google+ early this morning that a light box announcing a new feature was hovering over my Google+ account page.

Google+ has made it easy to create and market your event, whether that is a party or a conference. Google+ ways it is “for before, during and after your party

It offers these highlights.

  • 24 cinemagraphic themes (animated themes to show pictures to your invited guests)
  • You can invite anyone even if they are not on Google+ (by using their email)
  • Events are integrated into your Google calendar with a photo of the host
  • Your Google+ event guests can then be emailed to upload photos from the event
  • Google+ can aggregate all the photos from tyhe event in chronlogical order on a special page

3. Google+ for iPad is Coming

Some of you may have been using Google+ on your iPad and it certainly needed a grownup version for the iPad. Google+ is promising that it isn’t far away.

The app is promising to be much better visually organised, so posts with more engagement are larger, and you scroll sideways to browse content.

One of social media’s  real strengths is to connect global tribes who are passionate about their interests. It could be photography, gaming or gummy bears.

In the past “Tribes” met in town halls and coffee shops. Now we create virtual communities online that can use social media platforms and technology to hangout (hence the term applied by Google+ to its groups feature “Hangouts”) and talk about their “stuff” in words that are often incomprehensible to an outsider.

The opportunities are now about abundance rather than scarcity.

The Tyranny of Distance

Years ago tribes were localized. Finding people with similar interests was restricted by time and place.

200 years ago it took a donkey to get you to the next village for a meetup. Today we are leaping on planes to catch up with our global colleagues who share our passion at a conference or expo. The internet and social networks allow us to connect to our tribes with video, sound and images with the high speed web links whenever the whim arises.

5 Twitter Tips for Efficient Tweeting

We all want to be more efficient and find the best tools and tactics to obtain maximum results. Buddy Media have just released some research findings that reveal what tactics make Twitter sing and dance.

Tip #1. Tweet When People are Busy

People at work, with or without their bosses permission often have their Twitter account open. People use Twitter for finding out about real time news about brands and events. The study showed that Tweets during the hours of 8am to 7pm received 30% higher engagement.

Tip #2. Keep Your Tweets Short and Snappy

On Twitter you have 140 characters. Some people try and fill it up (as humans we tend to do that a bit). If you keep it short then you give people room to add their comments and own hashtags and their friends Twitter handles.

The Buddy Media research revealed that “Tweets that contain less than 100 characters receive 17% higher engagement than longer tweets.

Tip #3. Tweet Content

Don’t waste a Tweet (still have conversations of course) by not including a link. Tweets with links are retweeted 86% more than ones without. Want to amplify your brand message and make your content spread.  Include links for the best results!

Tip #4. Hashtag to Win

Hash Tags are the use of this sign, #, that puts your tweets into the communities that you want to reach, For example, using the “hashtag” for reaching social media focused groups, looks like this,  #social media.

The study revealed that Tweets with hashtags receive 200% more engagement than those without hashtags.

Tip #5. Ask Followers to Retweet

Sometimes it just helps to ask. Tweets that specifically ask followers to “Retweet” receive 1200% more retweet rates than if you don’t ask. So start becoming assertive.

Step Six

Step Seven

Scroll down and click on the ‘Log in’ in the right menu bar to access the admin area. The dashboard should look like this:

Enter the title for the article/post and then enter the text below that headline. You may already have an article you have written in “Word” or a text editor which you can paste (insert) using the . When happy with what you have written then it is time to publish.

Click ‘Publish’ in order for your post to appear on the site.

Your blog is now “live” and visible for all to see.

Step Nine

Customising the appearance of your WordPress blog can be done to suit your personal tastes.This is not necessary but I am sure that eventually you will want to make it suit the topic you will be blogging about whether it is photography, food or sport.

This can be done in ‘Appearance’ section of the admin menu. Hundreds of free themes and widgets are available there which will allow you to make your site look completely different and unique. Browse through them and you will surely find something useful.

So what are some simple steps that many bloggers just forget or can’t be bothered to do?

Just about all of us have friends and followers on social networks. Some are only are on Facebook, but most have multiple social network accounts.

Dont be afraid to use those social media platforms to tell people that you have published your content on your blog.

#1. Facebook

As a blogger you will need to create a Facebook page for your blog. It doesn’t need to be complicated. If you haven’t got a Facebook page do it today.  If you haven’t then tell your friends that you have published on your article by posting it to your personal page. Copy the blog article link and drop it into your “What’s on your mind?” status update box. Don’t be shy.

#2. Twitter

Twitter has been my most efficient platform for promoting my content. If you don’t have a Twitter account go and set one up now. It is not difficult, include a photo, a link to your blog and a short description of what your blog is about. Drop in your headline, your link and hit publish. There is one tool that I use to manage Twitter called Hootsuite which allows you to use the micro blogging platform very efficiently and is worth checking out once you have created a Twitter account.

#3. Google+

Publish your article on Google+.  Google+ is Google’s social network that is now one year old. If you haven’t registered on Google+ yet, I would strongly recommend you do. This social media account is now an important part of the social web (with over 250 million registered users) and should be included in your blog post article promotion process. It is not just a copy of Facebook and has its own customs and tribes. Google is also using Google+ to collect social signals on what people like and don’t like online and including this in its search results. This will become more important as time goes by for having your articles found in search.

#4. Pinterest

For visual bloggers this is vital. Pinterest burst onto the screen about a year ago after flying below the radar. Pin you videos and images on your blog to your Pinterest account after publishing. It will help you make your content get shared which will then also link back to your blog from wherever it has been pinned.

#5. LinkedIn

LinkedIn is very often ignored as a source to publish your content. It is especially powerful in the B2B market segments. If you have a look at the number of LinkedIn shares on this blog on various articles you will realize that it should be part of your marketing tactics. It is as simple as a Facebook update.

Final Tips

Despite the popularity of social media and its shiny new toy attraction, I would strongly recommend that you do not forget two essential tactics. Firstly include an RSS subscription button on your blog so people can receive automatic notifications that your article has been published in their reader subscription platforms such as “Google Reader”

Lastly and most importantly making it easy for people to subscribe to your blog with an email subscription is still the most important blogger promotion platform today. Email may seem passe to some but building an email subscriber list and “list building” is a core asset that you should include from day one.

How A Strategic Marketer Uses the Buffer Social Media Sharing Tool

We all love to Tweet, Like & Share. It’s the modern meaning of SOCIALism, and today we can connect with just about anybody. Hell, I could send President Obama a Tweet right now and feel special. Sure, he wouldn’t read it, and I’m under no illusion that an employee takes ‘care’ of things.How a Straegic Marketer uses Buffer

So it makes sense that I hold Social Media in high regard. As a modern day Strategic Marketer, I live by the rule of Creative Thinking + Strategic Thinking = 21st Century Success. I live by this notion so much that I wrote a Free, and very short Ebook called What Is Strategic Marketing.

I love this balance of flair and rationale, but there are so many pitfalls that come with it. This is where the Buffer app (which is a tool that automatically publishes tweets at the best time of the day to reach the largest audience)comes to save the day. This is a story about how a Strategic Marketer uses Buffer to make his life easier…

The Problem

The biggest issue I face, like so many, is time…or should I say, lack of.

I love Twitter, but I can’t spend all day on it. I also love sharing content I come across, but again, I haven’t hour after hour to search the web and read. I have work to do, actual things that pay the bills and allow me to buy food.

So I spend 30 minutes here and there. On an average day I share about 20 articles and Tweet a few dozen times. The only issue is, all this will occur in short bursts.

I’ll have 20 Tweets come up in the space of 20 minutes, and then nothing for six hours. This is a terrible way to communicate.

Why This Is Bad

It’s all about impact.

First of all, having 20 Tweets show up in the space of five minutes makes me look like a spammer. This isn’t an image I wish to get and is very important to me.

Secondly, I only reach a small percentage of my followers. I live in England, but many of my followers live in America and Australia and Asia. There are time differences, and therefore a good time in Europe might be a terrible in China.

If a woman has 10,000 followers, she may only reach a few hundred of them at any given time. If she Tweets everything in one go, her reach is small. If she spreads them out instead, her reach grows.

This isn’t Rocket Science!

How A Strategic Marketer Uses Buffer

This is where the value of Buffer comes in. Lets face it, I don’t have to tell you as you’re already a Buffer fan. You know the value it brings. You know it saves time and offers impact.

However, you might not use it like a Strategic Marketer. If not, you may learn a thing or two:

To Spread My Shares

As I say, I love to share links on Twitter. One of my Core Values is Here To Share, and Twitter plays a large part in this. Buffer, an even greater one.

My Buffer schedule is set to share Tweets every hour, and during peak times (3pm – 6pm GMT) this increase to five times per hour. Therefore every time I add a new link to Buffer, I know it’s going to reach new people. It spreads my reach and gives my followers an incentive to check my news feed.

They know the shares are there, and just because they missed it once, doesn’t mean they won’t get a reminder soon.

To Improve My Impact

As well as sharing other peoples content, I create my own. If I was to Tweet it just once, my impact would be low. This isn’t good. Not good at all.

However, if I place my own messages in the middle of all the other messages I send, well, my reach increases.

As a general rule I share 3 or 4 links, then head to my own site and add one of my own posts. All of a sudden I increase my chances of being seen by people, but do it in a way that doesn’t come across as needy. I hate it when people only Tweet about themselves, as I’m sure you do too, but the occasional selfish act is fine.

Buffer allows me to be selfless and selfish all at the same time. How great is that?

To Maximise Measurement

As a Strategic Marketer, measuring things is important. I not only want to know my Tweets are going out, but whats happening to them afterwards. Buffer offers some simple analytics to show me how many clicks a particular message gets, and if it gets Retweeted, etc.

This isn’t what really interests me, though. Oh no, it’s the ability to link Buffer with other services…in my case, with Bitly

First of all, using Buffer means any links I share get shortened. This means more space to write great content. This is called WINNING.

Secondly, Bitly follows the bigger picture. It tells me how many shares a particular links gets, not just showing the reach from me, but the larger population, too. This is great for monitoring trends and taking your communications to new levels.

This how a Strategic Marketer uses Buffer. This is why Buffer is awesome. It lets me be the best Marketer I can be.

Facebook is still the defacto social network with over 900 million users. To make money though, it has no other option but to monetize the stream called the Timeline. This puts a lot of clutter onto the screen.

Facebook has also admitted that it hasn’t got its mobile strategy and platforms positioned to take advantage of the explosion in mobile from iPads to Androids and the recently announced Microsoft mobile tablet “Surface“.

This gap in their plans was seen more clearly when they paid a premium price of $1 billion for the mobile photo app Instagram to secure a mobile online asset as a beach head.

Facebook and Apple have also announced a close integration of Facebook for mobile in Apple’s new mobile operating system iOS6. This promises a more seamless and user friendly mobile interface.

Why Google Doesn’t need to Make Money from Google+

Google doesn’t really care about monetizing Google+ because it makes its money elsewhere. This is why

  • Mobile advertising revenue in the last 12 months was $2.5 billion
  • Search Advertising revenue in total is $38 billion

Facebook’s total revenue stream is from paid advertising and the monetizing of social games on  Facebook.

Last year this totaled $3.7 billion according to Forbes. That keeps the comparison between Facebook and Google in perspective!

Is Google+ a “Pure” Social Network?

The social signals that Google+ adds to its search algorithms maintains its search engine relevancy for users who will receive more personalised search results that improve user experience. This is vital for Google…to continue to be relevant.

Google+ can then be a “pure” social network without “Ads” that provides social signals for its other online assets because of the value it brings to its total ecosystem.  It doesn’t need to make revenue from its Google+ platform that cost it over $500 million.

Facebook has no choice but to include advertising in its network platform.

The Philosophy of the Social Networks

In viewing the philosophy and personas of the the top three social networks they are all taking and staking different positions online.

  • Google sees Google+ as core to its online properties. This can be seen with the Google+ button on almost all its online properties from Gmail to Google”Reader”. Google is about relevancy and user experience.
  • Facebook positions its social network platform as being about people’s identity. The “Timeline” update further reinforces this position as it allows you to update your life history and place it with the appropriate date stamp in your timeline stream.
  • Twitter sees itself as about “Events”. Breaking news and events globally in real time but keeping its charm and interface simple.

The challenge that most Facebook users face with changing to other social networks is that number one, it is a matter of time managing two social platforms and secondly why change when most of their friends already hangout on Facebook.
